    Achieving an optimal trade-off between revenue and energy peak within a smart grid environment

    We consider an energy provider whose goal is to simultaneously set revenue-maximizing prices and meet a peak load constraint. In our bilevel setting, the provider acts as a leader (upper level) that takes into account a smart grid (lower level) that minimizes the sum of users' disutilities. The latter bases its decisions on the hourly prices set by the leader, as well as the schedule preferences set by the users for each task. Considering both the monopolistic and competitive situations, we illustrate numerically the validity of the approach, which achieves an 'optimal' trade-off between three objectives: revenue, user cost, and peak demand

    Product-Closing Approximation for Ranking-based Choice Network Revenue Management

    Most recent research in network revenue management incorporates choice behavior that models the customers' buying logic. These models are consequently more complex to solve, but they return a more robust policy that usually generates better expected revenue than an independent-demand model. Choice network revenue management has an exact dynamic programming formulation that rapidly becomes intractable. Approximations have been developed, and many of them are based on the multinomial logit demand model. However, this parametric model has the property known as the independence of irrelevant alternatives and is often replaced in practice by a nonparametric model. We propose a new approximation called the product closing program that is specifically designed for a ranking-based choice model representing a nonparametric demand. Numerical experiments show that our approach quickly returns expected revenues that are slightly better than those of other approximations, especially for large instances. Our approximation can also supply a good initial solution for other approaches

    Affiche présentée dans le cadre du Colloque de l'ARC, «Des racines et des ailes pour la recherche collégiale», dans le cadre du 85e Congrès de l’Acfas, Université McGill, Montréal, les 8 et 9 mai 2017.Les chauffe-eau solaires thermiques au glycol ont atteint leur maturité technico-économique depuis des années. Deux études d’Hydro-Québec ont révélé les contraintes et les limites d’application de ces appareils. L’innovation de la technologie développée par Verrières Saguenay–Lac-St-Jean réside dans l’utilisation de l’air comme caloporteur à l'intérieur du capteur et dans le design de l’échangeur transférant la chaleur à l’eau domestique. Ce chauffe-eau solaire air/liquide surpasse le rendement du système au glycol, ce qui est contre-intuitif compte tenu de la plus petite capacité thermique de l’air. Le système air/liquide a été optimisé par des simulations numériques, pour être ensuite fabriqué et utilisé dans les mêmes conditions avec un système standard au glycol afin de comparer les rendements. Le protocole d’expérimentation et la collecte des données ont été affinés pour valider les paramètres optimaux de fonctionnement. Les tests de performance ont été réalisés à divers niveaux d’ensoleillement. Nos résultats démontrent une nette supériorité de rendement du système air-liquide et l’écart s’accroît progressivement avec la baisse du niveau d’insolation. Les rendements mesurés projetés sur une base d’ensoleillement standardisé pour quatre villes canadiennes montrent une augmentation allant de 16 à 38,7 % de chaleur produite annuellement. De plus, la nature du nouveau système permet d’éliminer les problématiques de montage et d’entretien des systèmes standards au glycol

    Measurement of the Lifetime Difference Between B_s Mass Eigenstates

    We present measurements of the lifetimes and polarization amplitudes for B_s --> J/psi phi and B_d --> J/psi K*0 decays. Lifetimes of the heavy (H) and light (L) mass eigenstates in the B_s system are separately measured for the first time by determining the relative contributions of amplitudes with definite CP as a function of the decay time. Using 203 +/- 15 B_s decays, we obtain tau_L = (1.05 +{0.16}/-{0.13} +/- 0.02) ps and tau_H = (2.07 +{0.58}/-{0.46} +/- 0.03) ps. Expressed in terms of the difference DeltaGamma_s and average Gamma_s, of the decay rates of the two eigenstates, the results are DeltaGamma_s/Gamma_s = (65 +{25}/-{33} +/- 1)%, and DeltaGamma_s = (0.47 +{0.19}/-{0.24} +/- 0.01) inverse ps.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; as published in Physical Review Letters on 16 March 2005; revisions are for length and typesetting only, no changes in results or conclusion

    Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+μ+νW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and WμνW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.     Evidence for the Higgs-boson Yukawa coupling to tau leptons with the ATLAS detector

    Results of a search for H → τ τ decays are presented, based on the full set of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC during 2011 and 2012. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 4.5 fb−1 and 20.3 fb−1 at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 7 TeV and √s = 8 TeV respectively. All combinations of leptonic (τ → `νν¯ with ` = e, µ) and hadronic (τ → hadrons ν) tau decays are considered. An excess of events over the expected background from other Standard Model processes is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.5 (3.4) standard deviations. This excess provides evidence for the direct coupling of the recently discovered Higgs boson to fermions. The measured signal strength, normalised to the Standard Model expectation, of µ = 1.43 +0.43 −0.37 is consistent with the predicted Yukawa coupling strength in the Standard Model
